In August 2009, as part of the International Youth Week, more than five thousand young people from several parts of Nyanza held a massive and peaceful street march and youth rally in Kisumu city to demand for sustainable livelihood opportunities for the youth. Participants at the march and rally sent out a clear message that youth unemployment in Nyanza has reached unacceptable and immoral levels of crisis. At a youth rally held at Jomo Kenyatta Grounds after the street march, the protesting youth resolved: that Nyanza Youth Coalition should petition the Government and private sector on the labour market issues that concern the youth in Nyanza; that they would take advantage of the existing opportunities to pursue entrepreneurship and self employment; that youth will be part of the solution and not part of the problem; and that if the government and the private sector decline to implement their demands, they would resort to continuous peaceful mass action until they are listened to. |
